Acceptance is the Answer
One of the most powerful passages in The AA Big Book is from page 417:
"And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation - some fact of my life -unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment."
This truth has been foundational in my own recovery journey and in the way I support others in their self-recovery.
We often resist what is, believing things should be different to how they are - whether it is ourselves, our circumstances or things that have happened in our past.
The fact is that resistance only keeps us stuck - what we resist, persists.
Acceptance is not about passive resignation; it is about reclaiming our power. When we stop fighting reality, we free ourselves to take meaningful action, to heal and to grow.
In my work as a Self-Recovery Coach, acceptance is at the heart of what I do. Whether it’s dealing with a loss, struggling with your sense of self or healing from past wounds, learning to embrace what is opens the door to self-compassion, peace and a deeper connection with who you are.
Where in your life do you need to practice more acceptance? How would it feel to stop fighting and start allowing?
