My Self Recovery Journey

For much of my life, I looked outside of myself for validation, approval and a sense of worth. I measured my value by how well I performed and whether I was “good enough” in the eyes of those around me. I often settled for attention or affection as a substitute for the love I was seeking and as a “quick fix” for my lack of self-esteem.

I joined a 12-step recovery group when my drinking and destructive behaviour brought me to the point where my husband at the time threatened to leave and take our kids with him. Walking into my first meeting, I realised that there were other people like me who had been trying various ways to just feel better. The irony was that the things we thought would fix us had actually ended up destroying us. Recovery taught me that true strength isn't about doing it alone, but about being willing to ask for help. I learned that my inner peace was directly connected to my ability to accept life as it is. Recovery showed me that my worth was never something I had to earn - it had always been there, waiting for me to claim it.

Four years into recovery, I lost my daughter in a head-on collision. So much loss and change left me reeling and wondering what the hell had happened to life as I knew it and to myself as I knew her. Grief altered me. It tested everything I had learned, but instead of shutting down, I leaned in. I allowed myself to feel, to heal and to trust that even in loss, there was a way forward. Through therapy, SoulCollage® and continued self-exploration, I found myself again - not as who I thought I "should" be, but as who I truly am. I learned how to trust my “knowing” and how to live from a place of authenticity rather than fear.
